About Auraiya District (Uttar Pradesh)
Auraiya district, a part of Kanpur division is a district of Uttar Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Auraiya town. After the down fall of Delhi and Kannauj Muslim rulers came to Auraiya district and ruled it for a notable period. In the beginning of the thirteenth century the place was invaded by Rajputs. In course of time, Sengars, Chauhans, Brahmans and Kayasthas were spread over the Auraiya district. Then the Mughal era started with the reign of Nasir-ud-din Muhammad Shah. After his death Ibrahim Lodi came into power in 1517 AD but he lost much of his power and influence on his subjects because of his quarrel with his brother, Jalal Khan. Later, another Mughal ruler named Ahmad Shah Durrani came to India and captured it. Under the Rohillas in 1760 AD Ahmad Shah Durrani entered in India, but then he was opposed in the year 1761 by the Marathas on the field of Panipat and inflicted on them a signal defeat. Finally, the entrance of the British changed the whole scenario of the district. At the time of Indian struggles for independence the people of this region participated very actively. After India got independence, the two tehsils namely Auraiya and Bidhuna were carved out from Etawah district on 17th September, 1997 in order to form a new separate district named as Auraiya.
Geographically, the district lies at 26°47'N latitude, 79°52'E longitude and 133 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 2.05% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area 2,016 sq. km. and on the basis of geographical area it secures 60th rank in the state and 495th rank in India. The place is enclosed by Kannauj district on the north, Jalaun district on the south, Ramabai Nagar district on the east and Etawah district on the west. The main rivers that flows through the district are Yamuna and Senger. The entire district lies in the Indo-Gangetic Plain but its physical features vary considerably and are determined by these main rivers which cross through it. The climate of the district characterizes as an atypical version of the humid subtropical climate. The summers here are long and extremely hot whereas winters are fairly cold. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 527.7 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 tehsils namely Auraiya, Bidhuna and Ajeetmal. These tehsils are further divided into 7 developmental blocks such as Ajitmal, Bhagyanagar, Sahar, Bidhuna, Achalda, Erwakatra and Auraiya. There are 2 Lok Sabha constituencies likewise Kannauj and Etawah and 3 Assembly constituencies in the district. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 13,79,545 out of which 7,40,040 are males and 6,39,505 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 864 females for 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 16.91% including 16.40% were males and 17.51% were females. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 28,128 including 14,501 were males and 13,627 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 3,696 out of which 2,424 were males and 1,272 were females. The district has a population density of 684 persons per sq. km. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 92.32% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 98.54%.
The economy of the district is basically dependent on agriculture. Some of its chief agricultural products are paddy, wheat, gram, mustard, sugarcane, etc. Most of the people in the district earn their livelihood from agriculture. The production level of the agricultural items depends on the irrigation facilities. Earlier, there was well-irrigation in the district but at present it is largely replaced by canals. Though the district is scantily industrialized yet it has some small scale industries which helps in its economy to a great extent. Auraiya city is famous for its marvelous wooden furniture work. The cost and quality factor of these furniture has made a good place in the market of nearby districts. Dibiyapur, a notable industrial town of this district has started India's leading Public Sector Enterprises such as 663 MW Combined cycle power plant of NTPC, Petrochemical plant and Gas compressor station of GAIL. Moreover, Uttar Pradesh Petrochemical Complex (UPPC) of Gas Authority of India Limited is also set up at Pata in Auraiya district. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 8,40,624 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 4,83,657 lakh at Constant Prices during the year 2011-2012. The Net Domestic Product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 7,49,513 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 4,18,670 lakh at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 48,369 at Current Price and Rs. 27,019 at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012.
The district is an abode of numerous reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its recognised educational institutions are Tilak Degree College, Gangaram Bajaj Inter College, Gopal Inter College, BTC Training Centre, Janta Maha Vidhyalaya, Janta Inter College, Nagar Palicka Inter College, M.R.Educational Institute, Jawahar Navodaya School, Bal Vikas Sansthan, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 78.95% including 86.11% are males and 70.61% are females. The total number of literates in the district is 9,30,836 out of which 5,46,198 are males and 3,84,638 are females.
Ashok Kumar Doharey, a prominent India politician and a member of the 16th Lok Sabha was born on 23rd September, 1970 at Rampura in the Auraiya district. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
During the year 2021, there were 7,11,857 domestic tourists who visited these places of the district. Every year numerous travelers from different parts of the country as well as world come to this place in order to enjoy its various centres of attraction with historical and religious significance. Some of its well known places of interest are Phoolmati temple, Kali Mata temple, Sankat Mochan mandir, Jai Maa Kali mandir, Shittes Dhwar mandir, Shiv mandir, etc.
