The Mumbai Suburban district is a district of Maharashtra. Its headquarters is in Bandra. This is the second smallest district of Maharashtra, and it administratively comes under Konkan Division. The metropolis of Mumbai on Salsette Island is made up of the district along with Mumbai City district and other suburban communities. Mumbai Suburban District is one of the largest districts in the country in terms of population. It is the fifth most populous district in India. In 1997, Mumbai Suburban was given the district status.

Aamir Khan, the most admired Indian film actor, director, producer and television presenter was born on 14^th March, 1965 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He is the recipient of numerous great awards, including the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010. Ajit Laxman Wadekar, an eminent former international cricketer who played for India between 1966 and 1974. The Government of India honoured him with the Arjuna Award (1967) and Padmashri (1972).

Geographically, the district lies at 19°15'N latitude, 72°88'E longitude and 14 m altitude.In the year 2021, there was a total 31.16% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 446 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 36^th in the state and 617^th in India. It is bounded by Thane Creek from Mulund to Trombay, Vikroli, Ghatkoper on east, Arabian Sea on west, Mahul, Mahim Creek of Mumbai City District on south and National Park and Thane Creek on north. The chief river of the district is Mithi River. The climate of the district is featured as tropical climate, specifically a tropical wet and dry climate. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 3545.6 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administrative wise, the district comprises of 3 tehsils-Kurla, Andheri and Borivali. The district has 5 Lok Sabha constituencies and 28 Assembly seats. The administrative language in the district is Marathi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 93,56,962 including 50,31,323 are males and 43,25,639 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 860 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate of the district was 8.29% out of which 6.11% were males and 10.95% were females. The population density in the district is 20,980 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 1,20,188 out of which 62,174 were males and 58,014 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 1,11,942 out of which 65,409 were males and 46,533 were females. As per 2011 census the major religions in the district are Hindu and Muslims with 67.73% and 19.19% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Marathi and Hindi with 35.22% and 29.57%.

The district is a land of innumerable multinational companies, domestic as well as foreign banks, financial institutions etc. To name a few are Wipro Limited, Larsen and Toubro, Tata Group, State Bank of India, Reliance, Life Insurance Corporation of India (L. I. C.) and Godrej. The port and shipping industry of the district is well established, with Mumbai Port being one of the oldest and most significant ports in India. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 5,23,63,600 lakhs at current price and Rs. 3,65,62,600 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 4,56,00,600 lakh at current price and Rs. 3,15,38,700 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 3,13,852 at current price and Rs. 2,17,069 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district has three types of schools-government aided or public schools, private schools and international schools. The Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay), Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), University Institute of Chemical Technology (UICT) are the leading engineering and technology schools of India, situated in the district. The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) are the two prominent research institutions of Mumbai. As per 2011 census the literacy rate of the district is 89.91% including 92.92% are males and 86.37% are females.

Ashok Shankarrao Chavan, a renowned Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 8^th December, 2008 to 9^th November, 2010 was born on 28^th October, 1958 in Mumbai. He is the member of Indian National Congress political party but on 9^th November 2010, the Congress Party asked him to resign from office over corruption allegations against him. Milind Murli Deora, a distinguished politician of India and served as the Union Minister of state for Information Technology and Communications (July 2011-May 2014), from the Mumbai South constituency was born on 4^th December, 1976 in Mumbai. He is the member of Indian National Congress political party.

The district has various centres of attraction which allures travellers from different parts of the world. The flora fountain is the magnificent fountain of Mumbai. The Flora Fountain, with an aesthetically sculpted monument on the top, is situated on the Dadabhai Naoroji Road. Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Mumbai is counted among the popular temples of the city. Radha Ras Bihari Temple which is commonly known as Iskcon temple in Mumbai is among the most beautiful temples in the city, located near the Juhu beach with over a hundred-feet high marble domes. The Elephanta Caves have many images of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Mumbai is also famous for its film city. The Gateway of India is one of the architectural marvels of our country which is located on the southern part of Mumbai on the shores of Arabian Sea. It is an important landmark of the city. The Rajaji Clock Tower was built in the 19^th century between 1869 and 1878 by George Gilbert. It is located within the University Complex of Mumbai. Some prime gardens and parks of Mumbai are Balodyan Gardens, Hanging Garden, Jijamata Udyan Zoo, Kamala Nehru Park and Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
