About Una District (Himachal Pradesh)
Una district is a district of Himachal Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Una town. Natives of the district believe that the today’s Una district, excluding its eastern side, was earlier a part of the Kangra State. Most of the part of the current Una district is popularly known as Jaswan Dun, which was under the rule of the Katoch family of the place, Kangra. The Jaswan State of that time occupied a fertile tract named the Jaswandun valley located at the outer hills of the erstwhile Kangra state, which was founded by a cadet of the Katoch line about A.D.1170. It is believed that Jaswan was the first off shoot from the parent stem. Probably, at the very beginning the State was a fief (Jagir) which later on emerged as an independent place during the period of the Muhammadan invasions. During different periods of time the place was ruled by different rulers. Finally, the place Una was emerged as a separate district on the map of the Himachal Pradesh state in the year 1976.
Geographically, the district lies at 31°47'N latitude and 76°27'E longitude and 369 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 41.06% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 1,540 sq kms and it is bounded by Kangra district on the North, Punjab on the South and West and Hamirpur district on the East. Satluj River, one of the most principal rivers in India passes through the district and alongside of the Shahtalai hills. The climate of the district remains pleasant throughout the year. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1090.8 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 5 tehsils namely Una, Amb, Bangana, Bharwain and Haroli. Moreover, it comprises 5 towns and 848 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.
According to 2011 census the district as a population of 5,21,173 out of which 2,63,692 are males and 2,57,481 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 976 (females for every 1000 males). During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 16.26% including 17.44% were males and 15.08% were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 92.13% of the total population. The population density in the district is 338 (persons per sq. km.). As per 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Hindi and Punjabi with 67.52% and 29.68%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 6,825 out of which 3,564 were males and 3,261 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 4,022 out of which 2,292 were males and 1,730 were females.
The economy of the district is solely dependent on agriculture. Most of the lands in the district are use for agricultural purposes. More than half of its population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are rice, maize, wheat, potato, cauliflower, cabbage, ladies finger, yam, cucumber, guava, black berry, pear, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. Now-a-days Una is also emerging as an industrial hub. It is renowned as a centre of small scale factories of Katha. The two most famous Katha manufacturer of the place are Kamal Katha Udyog and Master Katha Udyog. Moreover, some cylinder factories and steel plants also contribute in its economy to a great extent. The International Cars and Motor has also established one of their plants in the city. In the year 2015-2016 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 6,27,207 lakh at current price in the year 2011-2012. In the year 2015-16 the net domestic product in the district was Rs. 5,44,216 lakh at current price in the year 2011-2012. In the year 2015-2016 the Per Capita Income was in Rs. 1,00,295 at Current Price in the year 2011-2012.
The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 86.53% out of which 91.89% are males and 81.11% are females. The number of literates in the district is 3,99,715 including 2,13,281 are males and 1,86,434 are females.
The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Sheetla Mata Mandir, located in the Una district at Takka Road is very famous for curing some contagious diseases like chicken pox, eye disease and other skin diseases. People have a deep faith in the water of the temple that it is very divine. Moreover, the locket given by the Priest also has the power to cure the diseases. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Maa Chintpurni Devi Temple, Sri Radha Krishan Mandir, Shiv Bari Temple, Dhyunsar Mahadev Temple, Dera Baba Rudru, Baba Barbagh Singh, Suhin Guga Mandir, Jyoli Mata Temple, Thaneek Pura, Garib Nath mandir, Baba Moni Temple, Mahandev Mandir, Pracheen Mahandev Mandir, Pracheen Gouri Ganga Mata Mandir, Shri Ram Mandir, Santoshi Mata Mandir and many more. In the year 2021 the number of domestic tourist in the district are 61,828.
